On the origin of the recent herpetofauna of Sicily: Comparative phylogeography using homologous mitochondrial and nuclear genes
2016
Abstract In contrast to oceanic, continental islands are expected to show less diversification and endemism and thus phylogeographic signatures of multiple colonization events from adjacent continents due to episodic connections by sea level changes. In order to test this situation for the herpetofauna of Sicily, we here focus on three amphibian and four reptile species-groups and investigate their phylogeographic relationships across the Sicily and Messina straits, where Plio-Pleistocene marine transgressions shortened the distances between (or connected) Sicily, North Africa and/or the Italian (Apennine) Peninsula. Using a multi-species, multi-marker phylogeographic approach (mitochondria…
Carbon storage of Mediterranean grasslands
2016
Secondary grasslands are one of the most common vegetation types worldwide. In Europe, and in the Mediterranean basin, human activities have transformed many woodlands into secondary grasslands. Despite their recognized role in the global carbon cycle, very few data are available for estimating the biomass of Mediterranean grasslands. We developed linear regression models in order to predict the biomass of two native Mediterranean grasses (Ampelodesmos mauritanicus and Hyparrhenia hirta) and an invasive alien grass (Pennisetum setaceum). Ampelodesmos mauritanicus is very common throughout the Mediterranean basin, mostly on north-facing slopes, H. hirta characterizes thermo-xeric grasslands,…
1998
Rock phosphate and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza effects on growth and mineral nutrition of Zizyphus mauritiana Lam. in an alkaline soil. The influence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) and rock phosphate (RP) was studied on jujube (Zizyphus mauritiana Lam.), a multipurpose fruit tree in Sahelian agroforestry systems. Jujubes were inoculated or not by Clomus manihotis Howeler, Sieverding & Schenck in an alkaline sandy soil to which were added five levels of RP (12 % of P) : 0.00, 0.31, 0.62, 1.25 et 2.50 g P/kg of soil, equivalent to 0, 775, 1 550, 3 125 et 6 250 kg P ha -1 . The jujubes seedlings grew poorly without mycorrhizal colonization and without RP applications (figures 1a…
The Other J.M.: John Maurice Clark and the Keynesian Revolution
2009
This paper suggests that Clark's views regarding the Keynesian Revolution illuminate some of the limitations of the Keynesian orthodoxy that developed after the war, bringing more institutional detail and a greater preoccupation with dynamic analysis. Clark developed the multiplier in dynamic terms and coupled it with the accelerator to provide the framework for business cycle theory. His analysis was not formalized and emphasized time lags and non-linearities, similar to Harrod. In addition, Clark was concerned with the inflationary consequences of Keynesian policies and he was dissatisfied with those mechanical interpretations of the income flow analysis, which came to be known as hydraul…
Merleau-Ponty's reading of Descartes : from Cartesian duality to the new ontological structure
2019
The duality between the mind and the body has been haunting a wide field of academic discussions since René Descartes’ (1596–1650) philosophy. The problem not only concerns the inexplicable relation between immaterial and material substances, but also the relation between reflective thought and the unreflected experience: there are two fields of evidence which both have their own types of clarity, but which remain obscure for each other. The lived and practical experience is opposed to the objective knowledge of the sciences. Cartesian philosophy is established on the refusal of the non-philosophical life, which, nevertheless, it cannot refuse. This work offers an investigation of Maurice M…
Merleau-Pontyn Descartes-tulkinta : kartesiolaisesta duaalisuudesta uuteen ontologiseen rakenteeseen
2019
Data from: Rapid diversification of sperm precedence traits and processes among three sibling Drosophila species
2013
Postcopulatory sexual selection is credited with driving rapid evolutionary diversification of reproductive traits and the formation of reproductive isolating barriers between species. This judgment, however, has largely been inferred rather than demonstrated due to general lack of knowledge about processes and traits underlying variation in competitive fertilization success. Here, we resolved processes determining sperm fate in twice-mated females, using transgenic Drosophila simulans and D. mauritiana populations with fluorescently-labeled sperm heads. Comparisons among these two species and D. melanogaster revealed a shared motif in the mechanisms of sperm precedence, with postcopulatory…
1999
International audience; Mauritious and Réunion are characterised by their contrasting education policies. Our research questions, form a comparative angle, not just the impact of these political choice but also the consequences of the way the two systems are run in terms of school democratisation. In order to do this, we make a point of putting in perspective the differentiated paths in school followed by pupils from a sample of schools in Mauritius and Réunion. The complementarity between quantitative and qualitative approaches makes it possible to show that the expected social effects are modulated by the behaviour strategies of the "initiated" actors. If the movement towards education fo…
2014
More than elsewhere, the issues covering educational planning are important in sub-Saharan Africa. Simulation models are the main tool of this type of planning. Most were designed or inspired by the World Bank or UNESCO. Yet, these models are too simplistic. This simplicity is a choice, although it is badly argued. The resulting vagueness is totally unacceptable, although imperceptible due to the simplicity of the models, which are not testable by facts. The simulation models are thus a sham and African educational systems continue to suffer grave imbalance in the allocation of resources. The conception of quality models, designed with a genuine concern to guide action, is possible and urge…
